Wordsworth House

Wordsworth House Care Home is situated about half a mile from Newcastle city centre, in a pleasant suburb, a much sought-after postcode area. The Home is well served by good public transport links and is close to Newcastle central station.

As you’d expect in the north east, we always give visitors a warm and welcoming reception, with a smile and a cup of tea or coffee. We quickly assess what their needs are and then direct them to where they want to be and the people they need to talk to.

Our staff team has an Excellence in Care award, which in a way says it all, but that apart, they are always smiling and happy, interacting with residents in a friendly and loving manner, genuinely interested in their families and their past experiences.

It’s an important part of our working ethos that we give the residents as much choice as possible. It’s not, ‘You will …’ it’s more about asking, ‘What would you like to ..?’ It’s about giving them choices and empowering them.

As far as activities are concerned, we have a very full programme - bridge club, art classes, animal therapy, the list goes on! Our residents often walk up to Osborne Road, a trendy area nearby with nice shops, bars and cafés, where they can have a cup of tea and a cream cake. We want them to socialise in the true sense of the word. After all, they can be surrounded by lots of people in the Home but still feel isolated from the wider community.

We are very much part of the local community, as we have strong links with schools and church groups. Some local businesses come to us so that residents who aren’t able to leave the Home can do some shopping. Also, the community around Osborne Road know our residents and interact well with them.

We also involve our residents in the running of the Home. We have a resident who is our doorman. Some of them set the tables for meals. A Downs Syndrome lady is the Manager’s assistant. She was interviewed for the job and helps with filing and other small tasks. It gives her a real sense of purpose.
